Comet Hale-Bopp, March 1996.

One of the best comets in recent memory. This photo was taken one cold morning from a dirt road near Awendaw, SC. The comet and stars were moving during the one minute exposure (as does everything in the sky). To avoid blurring, I constructed a gadget out of two boards, a 1/4" screw and a hinge that would track the sky for short periods (click here to learn more about "barn door" trackers...mine wasn't quite so fancy). I was sleepy and cold at the time, but in retrospect it was a magical experience.
